Of all the medicinal mushrooms studied by the author, the Maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa) has the strongest antitumor activity in tumor growth inhibition both when administered orally and intraperitoneally. In fact, most of the other mushroom extracts are reported ineffective when given orally. In this report, the author investigated Maitake’s activities on the inhibition of carcinogenesis and metastasis in mouse models of cancer. It was found that Maitake D-Fraction, the beta-glucan extract from the fruit body of the mushroom, inhibited both carcinogenesis and metastasis to a high degree (91% in both cases).
